PHYSICIANS OF TAVISTOCK

In July, 1955, Dr. Raymond L. Matthews came to Tavistock to assist Dr. Taylor and Dr. Halliday. He graduated from University of Western Ontario in 1952 and had further hospital training in London and Toronto. He was well liked in Tavistock, but remained here for one year only, after which he left to take further postgraduate training in anaesthesia.

Dr. Donald MacEachern, obtained his medical degree at Dalhousie University in Halifax in 1952 and continued postgraduate training until he became qualified as a specialist in surgery. He came to Tavistock, as assistant to Drs. Taylor and Halliday in June, 1958, but left early in 1959 to practise as a general surgeon in Milton, Ontario.

Dr. Donald R. Fuller came to practise with Drs. Taylor and Halliday in July, 1959 and was followed in April, 1960 by Dr. Edward S. Gibson.

Donald Ralph Fuller was born in Brooklyn, New York, son of Louis William and Grace Lillian Fuller. The family later moved to Toronto, where Don attended school. In 1950 he graduated from the College of Pharmacy with the degree, Phm. B. and accepted an appointment as demonstrator at the College for one year. For a period of three years he was employed as a pharmacist in Toronto. In 1954 he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and during his undergraduate days attained a standing which qualified him to become a member of the Honour Medical Society. He graduated with the degree, M.D., in 1958 and remained in Toronto for a year of internship at Toronto General Hospital before coming to Tavistock.

Although he has been engaged in active practice, Dr. Fuller has had a continued interest in further postgraduate study. In 1966 he was awarded a Study Fellowship in General Practice, provided by the Province of Ontario. Through this Fellowship Dr. Fuller was enabled to engage, for a period of six months, in studies in cardiology at the Buffalo General Hospital, which is affiliated with the State University of N.Y. at Buffalo.

Dr. Fuller is a Past President of the Perth County Medical Society and a former member of Council of the Ontario Medical Association. He has been active in municipal affairs in Tavistock, having been a member of the School Board in 1961 and 1962 and a member of the Village Council since 1963.

He is married to the former Laurene Elliott of Toronto, Ontario. They are members of St. James Anglican Church in Stratford.

Edward Slade Gibson was born in Toronto, son of Lyle and Edith Gibson, nee Slade, and his boyhood was spent in that city. After completing his secondary school education at University of Toronto Schools, he entered the University of Toronto, where he obtained a N.A. degree in 1950 and his M.D. degree in 1954. In that year he married Jean Schroeder of Toronto, who had graduated from the School of Nursing at Toronto General Hospital.

Following a year of internship at Toronto General Hospital, Dr. Gibson served as a medical officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, at stations located at Alymer, Ontario and at MacDonald, Manitoba. In 1959 he left the Air Force with the rank of Squadron Leader and located in Welland, Ontario, to engage in general practice. He came to Tavistock in April, 1960 and on January 1, 1961, became a partner in the Tavistock Medical Group.

His medical training and clinical experience in the Air Force and a genuine and sincere interest in people were factors, which helped to make Dr. Gibson a competent family physician, who was popular with his patients and respected by his medical confreres. He had a special interest in heart disease and his opinions and advice in this sphere of practice were valued by his medical associates.

After locating in Tavistock, his interest in the Armed Services was revived and he became attached to the 12th Medical Company, RCAMC(M) at Kitchener, where he served as Commanding Officer, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

Dr. Gibson became an active member of the Rotary Club of Tavistock and he and his wife were members of Knox United Church. He served on the Tavistock School Board from 1963 to 1966 and enthusiastically promoted plans for a new public school for the village. As Chairman of the Board in 1966, he had the satisfaction of seeing these plans materialize.

In the latter part of 1966, Dr. Gibson decided to leave the field of family practice to accept an appointment as a full time industrial physician with Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, in Hamilton, Ontario. His associates in the Medical Group felt keenly the loss of a valued partner and many people in the community were sorry to learn that Dr. and Mrs. Gibson were leaving Tavistock. They are living now in Burlington, Ontario.
