ORGANIZATIONS

The Tavistock Bowling Club

The first club must have been formed prior to 1902 for a report of the annual meeting shows Fred Krug, Sr. As President, A.E. Ratz as Vice-president, A. Steckle as Secretary-treasurer and John Vance and Harry C. Zimmerman as Directors.

The Gazette of July 18, 1912 reports the members getting the greens in shape with the prediction that our village will soon boast of an up-to-date bowling green. Electric lights were being installed four large and a number of smaller ones, to bring the candle power up to about 800.

In 1917 Mr. Ed. Berlet, tailor served as president calling the annual meeting in the Oxford Hotel on April 12, 1918. The fees were $5 for old members, $3 for beginners. The next year by request it was decided to admit lady members at $2 per year.

Hugh Hotson, shoe merchant, succeeded him with Harry Zimmerman as secretary. The members listed were: H. Zimmerman, H.H. Reid, Andrew Baechler, Stan Ogden, Walter Siegner, Ed Berlet, Ed Roth, Adam Roth, John Lemp, W.O. Kaufman, Hugh Hotson, Charles Mohr, Albert Miller, Werner Weitzel, George Zimmerman, Mr. Welford, Fred Webber, Clarence Bollert, Richard Hansen, Charles J. Kaufman, James V. Field, Andrew Kruspe, Neil Wettlaufer, George Holley, Lorne W. Appel, Sam Kruspe, Jake Woelfle, Otto Schaefer.

The receipts amounted to $188.50, the expenditures $183.05, the largest items being a note at the bank for $33.57, rent of grounds to Fred Eckstein $20 and to F. Schliuse $1.50 for sharpening the mower.

In 1919 Harry Zimmerman continued as secretary with Werner Weitzel as president. It was decided to hire a man to get the grounds in shape, to canvass for new members and to investigate a new lighting system. These new members were listed : A.J. Collins,. John Zimmerman, W.I. Cook, R.R. Murray, Walter Pearson. C.J. Klein, Carl Strahm, Louis Kaufman, Wm. Russel. Henry Heinbuch, Herman Bollert, A.E. Ratz, Mr. Friesen, Fred Hanke, George McKay, Frank Gingerich, Percy Armstrong, Fred Weston. Charles Pruss. The total membership was 42. The receipts amounted to $356.98, the expenses to $354.73, with rent still $20, tournament prizes $54.45, loss of $10 on a dance, new mower from the Glasgow Warehouse Company $19.32, water $12, cedar poles $14. Visiting clubs came from Wellesley, New Hamburg and Platttsville.

In 1920 the president was H.H. Reid, manager of the Standard Bank, secretary Harry Zimmerman, and for the first time a treasurer, A.J. Collins. Among the new members were Dr. F. Cawthorpe, Walter Gibson, G.L. Ratz and Clarke Hopkinson, After a special meeting the executive was ordered to proceed with new lights.

        - H.H. Reid and Harry Zimmerman to look for new grounds
        - Club continued to join the Oxford -Waterloo League.

1925 - Henry Heinbuch; secretary and treasurer remained the same as in 1924
        - Bill Campbell, new manager at the Standard Bank and Laverne Denstedt
          appear among members
        - New agreement with Mrs. Eckstein for $25
        - Co-operate with Rink Company to put on a demonstration on July 1

1926 - Lorne W. Appel; others continue in office.
        - President donates a cup for competition locally and plans a concert in the fall with
          local talent. Henry Eckstein, Charles Quehl, Charles Dietz mentioned for the first time.

1927 - Jake Woelfe - other officers continue
        - rent grounds for $25 from Mr. Henry Mansz
        - ladies' fee set at $2.50

        - Name of W. Parkinson appears

1929 - Hugh Hotson

        - new names include Norm Baechler and Rev. Edwards
        - accept the Gazette Cup with "Chick's" stipulations, join the Stratford and Dist.
          Bowling League: hire Bill Parkinson as caretaker for $100 and free membership.

        - H. Becker had succeeded Frank Haney as Bank of Montreal Manager.
        - New members incuded L. Wilkins, Mrs, Sally Baechler, Mrs. Wilkins, and Mrs. Ruby Quehl
        - Boys under eighteen had a fee of $2
        - To investigate building a Club House.

1931 - same officers as in 1930
        - first mention of E.C. Seltzer, Howard Zimmerman

1932 - Norman Baechler

        - First mention of Isaacher Corp, Wilfred Corp, W. Charters
        - Building Committee included J. Lemp W. Corp and G. Zimmerman
        - Club House subscription list was opened.

        - Clark Hopkinson was hired as greenskeeeper at $70
        - first mention of Floyd Bricker
        - new toilets set up one for the ladies on Mr. Lemp's property
        - Fees: Mens - $4 and $2.50

1934 - W. Corp, H. Zimmerman, H. Nuttall.
        - construction of a power roller was suggested by Floyd Bricker, Bricker, Denstedt
          and Hopkinson named a committee to check into same.
        - Tender of "Mike" Denstedt for $85 was accepted

        - Executive meeting passed motion to build a power mower with Floyd Bricker in charge
