SPORTS

In speaking of prosperity and progress Tavistock has made along business lines, it would not be well to allow the opinion to be formed that her male population interests itself only in material affairs. In the amateur sport line, the village and vicinity have a record of which even a large city might well be proud. The villagers support every enterprise for the advancement of amateur sports as well.

In the earliest history, association football had been the favourite game and other sports have never taken foot as had Britain's national sport. Year after year the Marlboros - for such is the club's name - have been looked upon as the strongest opponents in the game in this district, although they have never captured any trophies it was all the more creditable to them and established more firmly their claim on amateurism. In 1904 the Oxford and Waterloo County Hockey League was organized and a handsome trophy donated by Mr. Lafayette Hostetler of New Hamburg.

After a spirited campaign, the Tavistock team was victorious by a good margin; consequently, the trophy is now held by them. Many other sports and recreations are indulged in, and in all of them the traditions of Tavistock are well preserved.
