John S. "Reeve" Schaefer (1835-1918)
Born in Heidelbach, Kreis Alsfeldt, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany in 1835 (Jan. 31?) He emigrated to Canada when he was 16 years of age and upon arrival came directly to South Easthope where he worked as a carpenter for 15 years. Then went into farming on Lot 33, Con. 7 Suth Easthope where he remained for 12 years when he bought and moved onto the splendid farm at Lot 20, Con. 4 SEH. Member of SEH Township Council for about 30 years, first elected in 1872. Four years later elected Reeve and held that position for 21 years, then as County Councillor for the District for 6 years, Warden of Perth in 1891, then retired from public life.
In 1866 married Margaret Wilker.
5 sons and 4 daughters, all deceased except Henry. 2 brothers - Charles of Palmerston and August of Detroit, Mich.; 2 sisters Mrs. Adam Kalbfleisch of SEH and Mrs. Henry Gerhardt of Hamilton. Buried at Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery, Sebastopol.
