In 1869, brothers-in-law John Kalbfleisch and Adam Schaefer commenced business as contractors and builders, operating a planing mill and furniture factory on the west side of Woodstock Street just north of the railway. In 1899 a new addition facing Woodstock Street was added, 100 ft. long, with a three-storey front. Proudly pictured with his employees, Mr. Kalbfleisch can be seen to the left of the steps with his hands on his lapels.
