In 1874, William Matthies took over the carriage business of Vipond Sparks, one of Tavistock’s early pioneers, and built this shop at 63 Woodstock Street South on the corner of Woodstock and DeCew streets. It was refitted in 1888 with a new addition built. Standing behind the boy with the wheelbarrow is Caspar Kaufman. The next man holding the wheel is Henry Matthies, and the next is William Matthies.
