Michael Steele, M.D. (1860-1946)
Born at Avonbank, Canada West in 1860 a son of Thomas Steele of Peebleshire, Scotland. Attended high school in St. Marys and taught for 4 years in Perth County. Dec. 1888 graduated from Trinity Medical College, Toronto and bought the home and practice of J.P. Rankin on Hope Street West. Member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Tavistock. Clerk of session for a number of years, secretary of Tavistock Public Library, member of School Board, was Medical Officer of Health. 1911 elected member of Parliament (Conservative) for South Perth riding. 1917 re-elected as a Union candidate. 1921 left politics and was associated with the Swastika Gold Mine. Sept. 28, 1922 sold his home in Tavistock to Dr. Charles R. McTavish and moved to Stratford - private hospital. Judge of Juvenile Court, Registrar of Deeds, Perth County, resumed medical practice in Shakespeare then moved to Vienna, Ontario.
Died in 1946.
