The New Tavistock Free Library was opened on March 15, 1917.
The double door was one way of getting into the basement. Over the years it had been used by the Women's Institute, Brownies, Guides and other children's group. The Tavistock Women's Institute had provided kitchen ware for the use of the public.
The Historical Society used it for additional display space from 2005 until 2010.
