This unidentified photo of a local gravel pit comes from Mrs. Robert Matthies and was taken by A. A. Perrin of Berlin

Years ago, sand and gravel were needed from nearby gravelpits for Tavistock’s growth and development. There were two in the village of Tavistock and one in the vicinity of the village. Since the names of the original owners are unknown, I have assigned the following names. The Yausie pit was located south of the Legion Hall and extended east. The Matthies pit was on William Street and it extended to the back of the former Matthies property. The Wettlaufer pit was approximately an eighth of a mile south of the Thames River Flats and about two fields west of the Thirteenth Line.
